Something Borrowed: There’s No Excuse For Cheating. Ever!

Hollywood has this strange habit of finding any and every excuse for cheating. And honestly, it’s not that shocking considering that Hollywood is full of cheaters. And we just excuse it because they’re rich and attractive. But I didn’t expect Something Borrowed to be so obvious with their slandering of the poor woman who’s getting cheated on.

Honestly, even if it’s a well written and well directed movie, it’s very clearly a fantasy created by a cheater. Every time the main character does something evil to her best friend, they come up with a plot twist to justify why the best friend is worse.

You should sympathise with the main character because look at how terrible her best friend is. Oh don’t feel bad that Darcy’s fiance cheated on her with her best friend because she was cheating too. And she’s worse because she’s self absorbed. And no, you should sympathise with the main character because she knew her best friend’s fiance first. And she liked him first.

I hate this.

The Villainisation of Darcy Doesn’t Sit Right With Me

At the end of the day, no matter how self-absorbed and dense Darcy may be, Rachel is still the villain for sleeping with Darcy’s fiance. And even if Darcy was the worst person in the world, she doesn’t deserve to be cheated on. And she especially doesn’t deserve to be betrayed by her best friend.

This movie is so obviously skewed to make you sympathise with the other woman. The casual villainisation of Darcy is very transparent. This feels like a movie written by someone who cheated and wants to re create a fantasy where they were in the right for cheating.

Oh, poor Rachel. She’s just a little sweetheart who’s too insecure to confess her love to the man she really loves. And then there’s her best friend who makes everything about herself. Who swooped in and took the man Rachel loved. And if that didn’t make you sympathise with Rachel, why don’t we make Darcy a cheater too?

Never mind the fact that Darcy correctly guessed that Dex was cheating on her. Never mind the fact that Dex completely pulled away from her because he was actively pursuing her best friend. I don’t think there’s ever a reason for someone to cheat and yet … I’m not even mad at Darcy. Because whether she’s aware of it or not, Dex cheated first and he deserved to be cheated on in return.

Honestly, he’s exactly the type of man who deserves a self absorbed woman who’ll cheat on him with his friends.

The Real Problem Is That Dex And Rachel Are Both Cowards

Here’s the thing about people like Rachel and Dex. They seem like good people on the surface. They might even be good friends and partners to begin with. But in not even having the courage to go after what they truly want, they end up resenting other people for the choices they made. And they use this resentment to justify hurting the people who truly love them.

Dex was a coward for not confessing his feelings towards Rachel. And Rachel was the one who got out of the way when Darcy showed up. She could’ve easily told Darcy that she liked Dex. She could’ve easily told Dex that she liked him. She did none of that. She never truly told Darcy what she wanted. And if Darcy was truly that self absorbed and horrible of a friend, Rachel should’ve just dropped her.

And let’s not forget that Dex actively pursued Darcy. He was the one to propose to her. It’s so beyond evil and cruel for him to sleep with Darcy’s best friend after proposing to her. It’s beyond cruel that he was stringing Rachel along while being engaged to Darcy. And Rachel’s a horrible person for telling Darcy to marry Dex only to turn around and tell Dex not to marry Darcy.

These people are evil and I don’t feel sorry for them. They’re fully responsible for their life not going the way they want. And they blame everyone else before ever accepting accountability.

Final Thoughts

The movie is well made. I just couldn’t enjoy it. You see, I’ve recently gone through a breakup myself. It was not a pleasant situation. Obviously, neither of us cheated. We’re not like that. But I’ve come to the realisation that I attract men who lie to keep me around. And sadly, you can only lie to someone for so long before you end up resenting the person you’re lying to for making you feel like you have to lie to keep them.

It’s horrible logic. But that’s what happens when you’re a people pleaser. You give and give and give until you have nothing left. And instead of taking accountability for the fact that you gave up what you wanted, it wasn’t demanded of you, you lash out at the person you’ve been giving to.

So this movie just wasn’t it for me. Maybe I would’ve enjoyed it at another time. Though, I generally tend to look down on cheaters. It just didn’t feel like a love story to me. It felt more like a fantasy created by a terrible person to justify their terrible actions.
